Macalla enables MoneyText cross-border top-up and payment services

Dublin, Ireland: Macalla, Europe’s acknowledged leader and innovator in mobile commerce solutions today announced it has supplied its Macalla Platform to enable cross border mobile phone re-charging and associated services.

Branded MoneyText and marketed by leading independent provider PAL Telecom, the service uses the purchasing power of persons living in the developed world to bring low-cost, secure and convenient top-up and other propositions to the benefit of friends and family in the developing world.

The first phase of the MoneyText service allows UK resident Ghanaians to top-up mobile phones of persons in Ghana. The UK resident can pay via reverse billing, debit/credit card or cash through a network of agents. MoneyText uses agreements and connectivity between the Macalla platform and participating Ghanaian mobile operators including Onetouch, the mobile division of Ghana Telecom.

“With the increased penetration of mobile phones in the developing world and the proven capabilities of Macalla, now our customers can reach friends and family anywhere in the world and offer financial assistance, be it mobile phone credit for them to stay in touch or potentially to purchase a mobile handset or even a computer. This is just the beginning, MoneyText will be extended to other geographies and will deliver more benefits such as bill payment, loan dispersal and fund remittance.” said PAL Telecom CEO Mike Taylor.

“We are delighted to be the lead operator in this service”, commented Philip Sowah, Chief Officer, Onetouch. “It brings real and tangible value to Ghanaians and is our springboard, working with our partners PAL and Macalla for an extended range of cross-border and in-market services”.

Niall O’Cleirigh, CEO, Macalla explained “Underpinning this initiative is a shared vision of how best to provide our customers with solutions that deliver real, tangible and lasting value. The area of cross- border services is undergoing fundamental change and this is creating significant new market opportunities. Our pedigree in mobile technology, financial services and payment enablement and our partner relationships position Macalla ideally to take full advantage”.
