Job specification for Java Support Engineer

Responsibilities

  • The role is to act as a point of contact for all external customers, providing global technical support in line with service level agreements
  • The role involves providing strong technical operational support of this company's applications and software infrastructure in both the company’s hosted environment and its customer sites
  • Gain a thorough understanding of this company's system architecture to be able to provide initial support to customer issues, either in production or in test environments
  • Work with the level 2 operations team and level 3 development team to quickly diagnose and resolve issues as they arise
  • Work with account management to ensure that customer issues are addressed, communicated and that necessary incident reports are made available in a timely fashion
  • Manage incident data to ensure that incident tickets are kept up-to-date, closed when completed and provide the Head of Operations incident summary data as required
  • To work as part of the Macalla Operations Team, liaising with a Senior Developer/Architect on technical issues
  • Support will extend to key monitoring of production services, diagnosis of problems and assessment of both internal and client impact following any kind of incident
  • The role requires occasional out-of hours on-call duties to be able to address any customer issues which might arise at those times and need support

Mandatory requirements

  • B.Sc. degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 1+ years of supporting a Java/J2EE Application platform
  • Aware of need for standards and quality - used to meeting strict deadlines, whilst producing quality work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and capable of working effectively and confidently with customers, team members and management
  • Enthusiastic and ambitious about working in a dynamic and vibrant growing company
  • Some travel will be required
  • Willingness to work in a flexible, changing team environment
  • Supporting international client base

Essential experience

  • Experience of customer facing activities
  • Oracle/SQL/JDBC
  • Linux/Unix/Windows
  • Experience of application server  support and configuration (WebLogic, Websphere, JBoss, Tomcat or similar)
  • Experience of supporting distributed architectures using Web services and other middleware technologies

Desirable experience

  • Support of Virtualisation Technologies (Vmware, Xen, etc.)
  • An understanding of database design and familiarity with database performance/tuning issues
  • Industry knowledge of the mobile communications or financial payments industry
  • Knowledge of
    • Apache web server and modules configuration
    • Developing/debugging on both Windows and UNIX/Linux environments
    • Ant, CVS
    • QA, Automation tools
